BSM Specialty Camps

Course Descriptions

· Two to Tango! (piano duet camp) – Duets are so much fun! Here is a chance to "partner up" for the coming year at the keyboard. You will be learning duets from the Junior Festival list in case you wish to participate in that category next Spring. Duet partners will be assigned based on age and ability. Please let us know with whom you might enjoy making music, and we will take that request into account as we determine the best match for a year’s worth of fun music-making! Pre-requisite: At least one academic year of piano study.

· Goin’ Country! (accompany live fiddles!) – Learn to play chords by ear while accompanying guest fiddle players on some the best-loved fiddle tunes in Texas. This valuable piano skill – known as "second-ing" – will not only be a blast to learn, it will be greatly enhance your ear-training success on upcoming theory tests! Choice of weeks listed on Schedule Request Form. Prerequisite: At least one academic year of piano study.

· I Write the Songs (for the aspiring composer) – Is there a melody in your head that you can’t write down? Do you want to learn to write your own music? Sign up for this camp and say "Roll over, Beethoven! Here I come!" Camp includes an initial group meeting, followed by two private lessons during the months of June and July, (depending upon your schedule), and ends with a recital of your finished composition. (Past students have entered their summer compositions in Fall contests and have won awards at the local, state and regional levels.) Prerequisite: One completed year of piano study.

Class No. 1: June 7, 3:30-4:30 p.m. (Tuesday)

Class No. 2: June 13-July 21 p.m. (Two half-hour sessions will be scheduled with each student)

Class No. 3: July 29, Friday, at 7:00 p.m. Composition Recital

· Great American Masters Camp I: Great American Folk SongsJune 28-30 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. (for Elementary and Junior High Students) Stephen, Scott and Woody are not characters in the next "Toy Story" sequel. Stephen Foster, known as the "Father of American Song", Scott Joplin, a master of ragtime composition and Woody Guthrie, an important figurehead in the American Folk movement. Join us as we discover many of the works these men created on their way to becoming part of America’s musical heritage.

· Great American Masters Camp II: Edward MacDowell (1806-1908)July 12-14 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. (for Elementary and Junior High Students) This Romantic Era composer lived at a time when American music and American composers were becoming known on the world music scene. MacDowell was one of the first seven Americans honored with membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and his works (mostly for piano) included many pieces about nature and outdoors in his beloved New England life. This camp will explore the beauty of his music, the influences in his personal life and how his wife ensured that his musical legacy would endure the test of time.

· Great American Masters Camp III: Aaron CoplandJuly 5-7 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. (for Junior and Senior High Students) An American composer, composition teacher, writer and later a conductor, Aaron Copland forged a distinctly American style through his use of folk songs and themes. Known as "the Dean of American Music", his works include many genres, with his ballets holding particular appeal to a wide range of audiences.

· Great American Masters Camp IV: Alberto GinasteraJuly 19-21 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. (for Junior and Senior High Students) This pre-eminent Argentine 20th century composer creates excitement through driving rhythms and captures the essence of Latin-American culture in his works. Attention to his music ranges as widely as the progressive rock group Emerson, Lake & Palmer, who included one of his composition on one of their top-selling albums. His many piano masterworks are of special interest to BSM students!

 

Summer Registration and Tuition is due on or before May 11, 2011
