Dr. Hughes' Gainesville, Florida Piano Studio

During her tenure as a University of Florida Department of Music faculty member, Dr. Hughes also maintained a small studio of intermediate and advanced pre-college-aged students . She encouraged her students to participate in festivals, competitions, recitals, and informal performances in order to build confidence and to promote musical growth. During 1997 and 1998 her students participated in the following events:

    MTNA* High School Yamaha Piano Competition (Honorable Mention at the State level)

    National Federation of Music Clubs local and state festivals (Honorable Mention in the Piano Solo Category at the State level and a Music Camp Scholarship)

    National Piano Guild Auditions (All students received superior ratings)

    FSMTA* Concerto Competition (Winners at the District Level)

    FSMTA Byrd Piano Ensemble Competition (Winners at the State Level)

    FSMTA Community Service Award Competition (Winners at the District Level)

    GMTA* Schubert Recital

    GMTA Bernice Maskin Chamber Music Recital

    GMTA Alma Fennel Competition

    GMTA/Garden Club's Parade of Homes Recitals

    Friends for the Promotion of Music's Betsy Schnell Competition

    Friends for the Promotion of Music Annual Chamber Recital

    Solo recitals at local retirement homes

Past students have performed as finalists and semi-finalists in national and international piano competitions. A former student was a national finalist in the MTNA Baldwin Junior High Piano Competition at the National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee in Spring of 1998.
