How to Remove Individual Dies from the
Rubicoil Punch If you punch material of a non-standard width, or if your material isn't lined
up just right, you may end up with half-holes on one or both edges of the
material. To remedy this, you need to remove the dies that punch the half-holes.
This procedure tells how to remove the dies. An added benefit is that, since
the procedure involves removing the cover from the punch, there will no longer
be a curving front edge to throw off your alignment. We've also found it useful
to cut and drill a short piece of aluminum L bracket to place under the
alignment guide, so it's longer and makes it easier to square up the material
you're punching.Although this procedure has worked fine
for us, be aware that it could void any warranties that you may have in effect
and, if done incorrectly, damage your punch, so proceed at your own risk.
To remove individual dies:
1) Loosen (but do not remove) the four big Phillips-head screws from the ends of
the handle. The screws are very tight--you will probably need an impact driver
and a #1 Phillips bit. Be careful that you don't damage the screws, or it
may be impossible to remove them. If you aren't familiar with using an impact
driver, you may want to let an experienced person do this.
2) Turn the punch over, and remove the four silver screws that hold the white
plastic cover
on (they are against the green metal; don't remove the 6 screws that hold the chip tray
or the 4 screws that hold the legs.)
3) Turn the punch right-side-up, and remove the four Phillips-head screws that
you loosened in step 1) This will free the handle-lay it aside.
4) Lift up the white plastic cover, remove it, and lay it aside.
5) Replace the handle and the four screws that you removed in Step 3)
6) Looking at the front of the punch, you will see the row of dies, and a metal
bar (held by four Allen-head screws) that pushes the dies down when you pull the
handle forward.
7) Loosen, but do not remove, the four Allen-head screws. Again, these screws
are tight, so loosen them carefully so you don't damage them: keep pushing the
Allen wrench into the screw head while you're exerting counter-clockwise
pressure, until you hear the screw "crack"-it will then be loose.
8) Remove the four screws and the bar--this will expose the tops of the dies.
9) Lift out the dies that need to be removed, and replace the bar and screws.
10) When you're done punching, remove the bar again and replace the dies.
