The Blackburn-Hughes Duo

In 1986 flutist Helen Blackburn and pianist Holly Hughes became colleagues at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, and it quickly became evident that they were destined to be good friends as well as colleagues. They soon began performing as the duo Women of Note, and were in demand as performers across the Southwest. Although their teaching careers have separated them by miles over the past several years, they continue to perform and tour both in the United States and Europe.

In recent years their focus has turned from the traditional literature for flute and piano to 20th-century works by American and European composers. They also have a strong interest in art music based in folk song and have been collecting compositions in this genre to be recorded on their upcoming album.

What people are saying about the Blackburn-Hughes Duo:

"An outstanding musical duo", with ensemble playing that is "simply wonderful." Gainesville, Florida

"Helen is a fine flutist, and they make a super team!" Tallahassee, Florida

"This is a well-matched pair of professional performers whose focus on beauty of tone and expression make listening to them a real pleasure." Abilene, Texas

"What a concert! It was a thrill from beginning to end!" Tampa, Florida

"They are two fantastic musicians!" Tabor, The Czech Republic

Both performers communicate directly with their audiences in a charismatic and exciting way. When interviewed, Helen Blackburn said, "Performing and teaching the flute are my life. It is great to know that audiences can be entertained with such wonderful music..." Holly Hughes added, "Musical collaboration with a player as fine as Helen is a joyful experience."
